After their award winning production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar in 2011, P&P Productions return to Lighthouse next May with Sondheim’s gruesome tale of Sweeney Todd.
7-11 May 2013 at Lighthouse, Esplanade, Poole, BH15 1UG
To be directed by Sylvia Denning
A musical thriller, set in nineteenth century London, Sondheim turns this famous story into a dramatic tale of injustice, revenge, murder and love.
Sweeney Todd, "the demon barber of Fleet Street", is not an out-and-out villain, and Sondheim’s show is told with understanding and humour - it is easy to see how the grievances that Sweeney has faced have driven him to such extreme actions!
Caught up in Sweeney’s story are the comic, but unscrupulous, Mrs. Lovett who disposes of the bodies of his victims in order to produce "the best pies in London"; the villainous Judge and his side-kick the Beadle; the innocent Johanna; her heroic rescuer Anthony; the blackmailing Pirelli; the mysterious beggar woman and the young, trusting Tobias.
Sondheim’s dark masterpiece was adapted to film in 2007 and has enjoyed renewed interest in the 2012 London stage production. If you enjoy the thrill of horror stories and have a taste for black humour then this production will not fail to please you! However, with much comedy and fabulous music there is something for everyone in the tale of Sweeney Todd.
